What Can a Sun Path Tell You About Your Home?

Morning Sun

The morning Sun generally approaches from the sunrise side of the sky. Its exact bearing changes with the date and latitude, so it is not always due east. Compare the direction with the orientation of a wall, balcony or bedroom window, then check obstructions on site.

Afternoon Sun

Afternoon and western exposure can matter when planning outdoor use or considering a property. The map helps identify the direction toward the Sun; it does not know the home’s floor plan or whether a neighbouring structure blocks the light.

Seasonal Changes

Latitude, season and hemisphere affect the Sun’s altitude and the length of daylight. June and December represent different seasons in the two hemispheres. The fixed reference dates help you compare the calculated geometry without assuming that June means summer everywhere.

Outdoor Areas

Use the Sun map as an initial reference for patios, gardens, balconies, pools and outdoor living areas. Visit at different times and inspect fences, trees and nearby buildings. Astronomical day length does not equal the number of direct-sun hours available at a particular spot.

Morning Sun generally comes from the eastern part of the sky, but its precise direction changes with latitude and date. Compare the displayed morning bearing with your home’s orientation. The tool cannot determine whether trees, buildings or the structure of your home block that light.

Which side gets afternoon Sun?

Afternoon Sun generally comes from the western part of the sky. Use the afternoon bearing for your chosen location and date to understand the direction. Actual sunlight on a wall, window or outdoor area also depends on its orientation and local obstructions.

How does the Sun path change between summer and winter?

Outside the tropics, summer generally brings a higher daily Sun path and longer daylight, while winter brings a lower path and shorter daylight. Seasons are reversed between the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. Near the equator, the relationship is different, so compare the calculated dates rather than assuming a universal pattern.

Does this map show shadows from buildings and trees?

No. The map calculates astronomical Sun positions and does not model shadows or obstructions from buildings, trees, fences or terrain. The map background and direction rays are not a simulation of which parts of a property receive sunlight.

Does the Sun move differently in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres?

The seasonal cycle is reversed across the hemispheres. The direction of the Sun at solar noon also depends on latitude and time of year; within the tropics it can be to the north, south or nearly overhead. This tool calculates the direction for the selected location and date.
